TOEFL Instructions Weeks 3 and 4

Now that we have practiced reading and writing the essays it is time to focus in on the actual requirements of 'how to answer' a TOEFL essay question. I therefore remind you to look first at 'What type of Essay is it?' There are six types of TOEFL essays...
  1. Choose a point of view and support that view.
  2. Describe something.
  3. Compare two points of view and tell which one you agree with.
  4. Agree or disagree with something
  5. Explain why something is true.
  6. Support and idea or plan.
Each has a unique style and each needs to be answered very carefully. I recommend you return to the previous posting 'TOEFL Essay Writing Tips' where there are clear instructions on the 'How To' aspect of answering the essay. Also our posting on 'How to write an essay.'

In week 3 we will have unlimited time to complete the essay and provide the brainstorming as well as rough draft copies. However in week 4 we will narrow the time significantly to the one class period - 40 minutes.

In week 5 we will run our last practice, hand written essay and then in week 6 take the online demonstration in the computer laboratory.
